IAVA’s Advocacy and Members in Action
What is IAVA's Cavalry?
YOU ARE THE VOICE OF THE POST-9/11 GENERATION OF VETERANS
IAVA’s Cavalry is our premier leadership development program. What started as a handful of veterans walking the halls of Congress has evolved into a series of well-structured convenings that train Post-9/11 generation veterans in advocacy.
Those chosen to be Cavalry Members get the opportunity to meet with policy makers, to share their stories, and to discuss the issues that matter most to post-9/11 veterans. When IAVA calls in our Cavalry, our nation’s leaders listen and real change happens.
WHY DO WE NEED A CAVALRY?
Put simply – we can’t do our work without IAVA’s Cavalry. Our staff alone can’t advocate on behalf of the more than 3 million post-9/11 veterans alone. We need our best members to be the face of our generation of veterans. We need them to tell their stories, and convince policy makers and those in power to act. And IAVA staff are standing ready to train you to be able to do so, in Washington, and back at home in your communities.
We lean on trained Cavalry Members to be voices in the media and leaders in their local community. As well, select Cavalry Members will be invited to receive additional training as an IAVA Leadership Fellow to prepare themselves to take on additional leadership within our Cavalry.
WANT TO JOIN IAVA’S CAVALRY?
Once you’re a part of IAVA’s Cavalry, you’ll forever be. But the first step is applying to our all-expense paid, week-long advocate training program that we execute every spring in Washington, DC. Join us as we shape history through our advocacy. Be a part of the legacy that is IAVA.
The application period to join IAVA’s Cavalry in the spring of 2024 is open through January 21st. If selected, you would be expected to be in Washington, DC when we “Call in the Cavalry” on March 3rd-March 7th, 2024, and we promise it will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Interested in applying? The application period for Spring 2024 is now closed. Please stay tuned for future opportunities.
What are the outcomes?
Together We Win
Your support of IAVA connects, unites, and empowers post-9/11 veterans through programs like the leadership development experience that provides the foundation for our Cavalry.
More recently IAVA’s in-person advocacy helped secure passage of the Honoring Our PACT Act in 2022- the largest expansion of Veteran health care benefits in generations. And our Cavalry Members were instrumental to ensuring the passage of the Deborah Sampson Act, which improved and expanded the care and support that our nation provides its women veterans.
Quite frankly, the IAVA Cavalry experience changed my life for the better and injected a passion back into my life that went missing after I retired.
I am a more confident and effective leader because of my participation as an IAVA Cavalry Member.
HOW CAN I JOIN IAVA’S CAVALRY?
Who can participate?
IAVA welcomes veterans and military-connected family members of all backgrounds to apply to be a member of IAVA’s Cavalry. We ask all applicants to be familiar with our policy priorities as those selected will engage decision makers on critical issues affecting post-9/11 veterans.
Participation in our Leadership Fellows program is by invitation only and will be offered to stand-out members of IAVA’s Cavalry.
WHY BECOME A MEMBER OF IAVA’S CAVALRY?
We Train Leaders
In addition to extensive media and advocacy training, those selected to be a member of IAVA’s Cavalry will leverage their voices to foster positive change on behalf of our community. Cavalry Members call on elected leaders across the political spectrum to fight on behalf of the post-9/11 generation of veterans. They share their stories, raise awareness for IAVA’s policy priorities, and demand action. You’ll learn to become an advocacy leader, help us deliver results, and become a part of IAVA’s legacy of winning on behalf of America’s newest generation of veterans.
