Mac outside of the military:

I have been happily married for 24 years and take great pride in being a father to three wonderful daughters. Among them are twins who are currently playing soccer in college, and my youngest is a junior in high school. Balancing family life with my professional commitments is something I cherish deeply. In my day-to-day role, I run the VA National Team at Loan Depot, where our mission is to assist active duty service members and veterans in understanding the benefits of their VA home loans. This position allows me to connect with my brothers and sisters from all around the country, helping them navigate one of the most significant purchases of their lives. Ever since I transitioned out of the military, I have been passionate about remaining connected to that community. My work not only fulfills my professional aspirations but also allows me to give back to those who have served. It is incredibly rewarding to be part of a process that helps military families realize their dreams of homeownership.

Mac on joining the IAVA Cavalry:

I felt that applying for the Calvary would be another meaningful way for me to connect with like-minded veterans, particularly those who served during the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT). This opportunity excites me, as it offers a chance to be part of something bigger than myself. Engaging with fellow veterans who share similar experiences and values is incredibly important to me, and I believe that joining the Calvary would allow me to contribute to a community that honors our shared sacrifices and commitment to service. It’s not just about the role; it’s about the camaraderie and the chance to support one another in our endeavors beyond military life.

How the military experience affected Mac’s personal growth:

My military experience has profoundly shaped me into the person I am today, influencing various aspects of my character, values, and approach to life. One of the most significant lessons I learned during my service is the importance of leadership and discipline. The military instills a strong sense of responsibility, teaching its members to make critical decisions under pressure and lead by example. This foundation has served me well, allowing me to inspire others and foster a spirit of teamwork in both my professional and personal life. My experience has significantly shaped my identity, instilling in me values of resilience, leadership, purpose, and community. These lessons continue to guide me as I navigate life beyond the military, and I remain committed to serving others in any way I can.

IAVA’s policy priorities that are the most pressing:

I strongly support alternative therapies for post-9/11 veterans because these approaches can provide additional healing options that traditional treatments may not fully address. Many veterans face unique challenges, including PTSD, anxiety, depression, and physical injuries. Alternative therapies can complement traditional care and offer holistic benefits.First, alternative therapies often focus on the whole person, not just specific symptoms. Methods like yoga, meditation, acupuncture, and art therapy can help veterans manage stress, improve emotional well-being, and foster a sense of community. These therapies can enhance mental health and provide tools for coping with the challenges of transitioning to civilian life. Moreover, many veterans have reported feeling more comfortable with alternative therapies. Traditional treatments, such as medication, can sometimes come with side effects or stigma. Alternative options can feel less intimidating and offer a sense of agency, allowing veterans to take an active role in their healing process.

IAVA’s policy priorities with the strongest personal connection for Mac:

I feel a strong connection to the policy supporting alternative therapies for post-9/11 veterans because it directly impacts the well-being of those who have served our country. Having seen or experienced the challenges that veterans face, I understand how crucial it is to provide them with various options for healing and recovery. First, my connection comes from a desire to help veterans who may struggle with traditional treatments. Many veterans deal with conditions like PTSD, depression, and anxiety, which can be difficult to manage with standard medication alone. By advocating for alternative therapies, I believe we can offer veterans additional tools that promote healing and better mental health. Moreover, I have witnessed the positive effects that alternative therapies can have. Whether it’s through yoga, meditation, or art therapy, these approaches can foster a sense of community and provide veterans with coping mechanisms that resonate with them on a personal level. Knowing that there are options available that can help veterans feel more comfortable and in control of their recovery deeply resonates with me.
