From Service to C-Suite: My Journey in Advocacy and Personal Safety
Who I Am
I’m Michael Matos, a Coast Guard veteran with over a decade of experience in the protective services industry. After my military service, I founded Personal Protective Concepts (PPC), a firm dedicated to empowering communities through practical safety education and training. My journey from military service to business ownership has been challenging and rewarding, shaped significantly by my experiences and the support of organizations like Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA).
Transition Challenges
Transitioning from military life to civilian entrepreneurship was not without its hurdles. One of the biggest challenges was navigating the business landscape, which felt entirely different from the structured environment of the military. I had to learn new skills in business management, marketing, and finance while adapting to the civilian mindset. There were moments of uncertainty and doubt, especially when it came to securing funding and building a client base from scratch.
Benefits of IAVA Cavalry & Fellowship
The IAVA Cavalry & fellowship program played a crucial role in my transition. IAVA is a veteran advocacy organization dedicated to improving the lives of post-9/11 veterans. Through their training programs, I learned how to effectively advocate for veterans’ issues to Congress, which has been invaluable in both my personal and professional development. The workshops, networking events, and one-on-one mentoring provided by IAVA helped bridge the gap between military service and civilian entrepreneurship. The camaraderie and shared experiences with fellow veterans in the program also provided a sense of community and encouragement, making the transition smoother and more manageable.
My Ventures
Personal Protective Concepts (PPC) focuses on training individuals and organizations in self-awareness, conflict avoidance, self-defense, and emergency handling. We offer various programs, including online communities like the Protect & Connect Network, and in-person classes that cater to different needs, from corporate self-defense to personal safety workshops. Additionally, I co-founded the Safe Harbor Alliance, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting members of the U.S. Coast Guard in response to sexual assault and harassment.
Military Experience and Business
My military experience has been instrumental in shaping my business. The discipline, leadership, and strategic thinking developed during my service have been invaluable assets. The rigorous training and real-world experiences in the Coast Guard provided me with a unique perspective on personal safety and self-defense, which I incorporated into PPC’s training programs. Moreover, the ability to stay calm under pressure and make quick, informed decisions has been crucial in managing the business effectively.
Challenges of Being a Business Owner
One of the most challenging aspects of being a business owner is balancing the various demands of the role. From managing finances and marketing to ensuring high-quality training and services, the responsibilities can be overwhelming. Additionally, staying adaptable and innovative in a competitive industry requires constant learning and improvement. There have been times when setbacks and failures tested my resolve, but perseverance and a clear vision for PPC’s mission kept me moving forward.
Tips for Aspiring Entrepreneurs
For those considering starting a similar venture, my advice is to leverage your military experience and skills. Discipline, leadership, and adaptability are critical assets in the business world. Network extensively and seek mentorship from experienced professionals. Understand that setbacks are part of the journey, and resilience is key to overcoming them. Focus on providing value and building trust with your clients, and always prioritize integrity and quality in your services.
Personal Safety: A Crucial Knowledge
One crucial aspect everyone should know about personal safety is the importance of situational awareness. Being aware of your surroundings and recognizing potential threats can significantly enhance your safety. Simple habits like staying alert, avoiding risky areas, and having a plan for emergencies can make a big difference. Personal safety is not just about physical defense but also about making informed decisions to prevent and mitigate risks.
Conclusion
Transitioning from military service to becoming a business owner in the personal safety and self-defense field has been a transformative journey. The support from IAVA and the skills acquired during my military service have been vital in this transition. As I continue to grow PPC and the Safe Harbor Alliance, I remain committed to empowering individuals and communities with the knowledge and tools to stay safe and secure.
