Shawn outside of the military:
After leaving the military, I transitioned into civilian life while continuing to look for meaningful ways to serve. I’ve stayed involved in leadership and community-focused work, particularly around preserving military history and supporting veteran-related efforts. The transition challenged me to adapt my leadership style beyond rank and structure, but it also reinforced the value of mentorship, accountability, and service.
Shawn on joining the IAVA Cavalry:
I’m excited to be part of the IAVA Cavalry cohort, to learn from this group, and to continue growing as a leader alongside other veterans who are committed to making an impact beyond the uniform. For me, this is a chance to share experiences, gain new perspectives, and contribute to meaningful work alongside others who share that commitment.
How the military experience affected Shawn’s personal growth:
My military experience shaped me into someone who values accountability, teamwork, honesty, and service above all else – all while trying to have fun. The challenges I faced in the Army taught me to be resilient and how to lead under pressure—skills I’ve carried into civilian life through my work in the community and in other charitable organizations. Most importantly to me, service instilled in me that leadership is about leading from the front, being responsible, and providing support to others. These lessons continue to guide who I am today and why I’m committed to learning and contributing alongside fellow veterans in the IAVA Cavalry.
IAVA’s policy priorities that are the most pressing:
I believe the most pressing IAVA policy priorities are support for transitioning service members and accountability in veteran programs. As a father whose son will be transitioning out of the military soon, transition support—including education and employment opportunities—will ensure that all veterans can successfully adapt to life outside of the military and continue contributing to their communities. Finally, accountability and quality care within the VA are essential to maintain trust and ensure veterans receive the benefits they’ve earned. These issues are important to me personally, as I’ve seen how they impact both individuals and the broader veteran community.
IAVA’s policy priorities with the strongest personal connection for Shawn:
I have a strong personal connection to our support for transitioning service members. Having experienced the challenges of transitioning out of the military myself, I understand how complex and sometimes overwhelming that process can be. This issue has become even more personal as I prepare to support my son in his own transition from service. Ensuring that veterans have access to career guidance, education opportunities, and community resources is critical—not just for success after the military, but for maintaining a sense of purpose and connection to the communities they serve. Supporting this priority allows me to advocate for others while also preparing to guide my son through this pivotal stage of his life.
