New York, NY –  Today, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) kicks off their annual Virtual Fly-In Event. Each year, IAVA’s Member Advocates meet with Members of Congress to discuss the issues that matter most to post-9/11 veterans. Videos of the event will be recorded and available on IAVA’s website and social media channels.

“2020 was a year of landmark legislation for veterans. After years of continued advocacy, the Deborah Sampson Act and the Commander John Scott Hannon Veterans Mental Healthcare Improvement Act have both passed,” said Jeremy Butler, CEO of IAVA. “Now it’s time to hold our government accountable to fully enact the legislation and create substantial change within Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) policies. These pieces of legislation begin a series of crucial efforts to modernize the VA and they cannot be put on the backburner.”

IAVA’s Member advocates will be meeting with Members of Congress from both parties to discuss the most pressing issues in the veteran community, including impacts from burn pits and toxic exposures, the veteran suicide crisis, the needs of women veterans, equitable access to VA healthcare, and more.

The event will feature testimony before the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee by Tom Porter, IAVA Executive VP of Government Affairs, and a Facebook Live event with House Veterans Affairs Committee Ranking Member Mike Bost (R-IL), IAVA CEO Jeremy Butler, and IAVA Member Advocates Sarah Letts and Corey Foster

Biographies of the Member Advocates for this week are available here. IAVA’s CEO Jeremy Butler and Member Advocates are available to meet with the media upon request through press@iava.org
