Washington, DC – Today, the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs unanimously passed the bipartisan Health Care for Burn Pit Veterans Act and was sent to the full Senate for a vote. This legislation would expand VA health care eligibility for post-9/11 veterans and is an important step towards ensuring that all veterans exposed to receive the health care and benefits they deserve.

“Military toxic exposures, like those from burn pits, continue to be the cause of too much pain and suffering for our nation’s veterans,” said IAVA CEO Jeremy Butler. “IAVA strongly supports the Health Care for Burn Pit Veterans Act. We thank Chairman Tester and Ranking Member Moran for advancing this legislation out of Committee. IAVA looks forward to continuing working with the Senators to ensure that additional legislation is passed by the end of this year.”

Approximately 3.5 million veterans were exposed to burn pits that spewed toxic fumes and carcinogens into the air. Yet the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) continues to deny approximately 70% of burn pit-related claims. This legislation would allow veterans that have deployed post 9/11 to have access to VA healthcare and increase training for health care workers and additional screening for veterans that may have been exposed to toxins while deployed.
