IAVA Celebrates Historic Selection of Adm. Lisa Franchetti to Lead the Navy

A giant step forward in overall recognition of the outstanding leadership by women across our U.S. military

July 21, 2023

Following is a statement from IAVA CEO, Allison Jaslow, on today’s news of the historic nomination of Admiral Lisa Franchetti to be the next Chief of Naval Operations (CNO):

“President Biden’s nomination today of Admiral Lisa Franchetti to lead the Navy is historic. Not just the Navy, but for America. Never before have we had a woman as a service branch chief and member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, but that is now set to change. Now the Senate just needs to finish the job, and confirm Adm. Franchetti.

With extensive experience at sea and ashore, Adm. Franchetti has commanded at all levels. She has dedicated her life to service. And thanks to Adm. Franchetti’s hard work and dedication throughout her career, she is now about to break what used to be not a glass, but an iron ceiling for women in the military.

The full implications of Adm Franchetti’s service as the Navy’s next CNO won’t be known for some time, but she will undoubtedly be an inspiration to millions of current and former women servicemembers. Today’s groundbreaking move not only installs incredible leadership atop the Navy, but is a giant step forward in overall recognition of the outstanding leadership by women across our US military.”
