For years, IAVA members have been adamant about their support for medicinal cannabis research for use in treating the wounds of war. Veterans have consistently and passionately communicated about their personal experiences regarding how cannabis offers effective help in tackling some of the most pressing injuries they faced when returning from war. In IAVA’s most recent member survey, 88% of IAVA members supported VA conducting the research, and 81% of members supported legalization for medicinal purposes. Our national policies are outdated, research is lacking, and stigma persists.

While the majority of IAVA members support legalization, the two most important questions still exist: “Is it safe?” and “Does it work?” This is why IAVA has prioritized passage of the VA Medicinal Cannabis Research Act (H.R. 712), which would finally require the VA to research the safety and effectiveness of medicinal cannabis. This bill recently passed out of the House Veterans Affairs Committee (HVAC) and awaits a vote on the House floor.

HVAC also recently passed the Veterans Equal Access Act (H.R. 1647) which would allow veterans residing in states with legal medicinal programs to talk with their VA doctors about the usage of medicinal cannabis.

America is entering a new era in the cannabis debate, and IAVA will be leading the way to ensure that veterans’ needs are protected, supported and elevated. Make your voice heard and tell Congress to pass the VA Medicinal Cannabis Research Act immediately and give veterans the answers they deserve!

Take a minute to ask Congress to support the legislation and TAKE ACTION HERE.
