Read: RRRP Weekly Report June 1

RRRP client quote of the week:

“The support you’ve provided and the time you’ve taken to truly listen to me and understand where I’m coming from means so much. I have felt ignored, misunderstood and unimportant until I started working with your organization.”

Trends:
RRRP continues to receive inquiries related to unemployment/underemployment, and requests for legal assistance relating to VA benefits issues and discharge upgrades. RRRP continues to assist veterans seeking assistance utilizing their Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits and VA’s Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (VR&E) services. Emergency financial assistance needs continue to dominate requests, as many clients are struggling with basic need costs like rent, mortgage, utilities, groceries, vehicle repairs, gas, and home repairs. Many clients seeking financial assistance are also inquiring about employment support and report that their financial and employment struggles are directly related to underlying service-connected general health and mental health issues. We continue to be contacted by veterans seeking assistance submitting their initial VA disability claims or upgrades, as well as those seeking access to VA healthcare and mental health services.

Referral Partner Highlight: VA Caregiver Support Program
The VA Caregiver Support Program offers enhanced support which includes training, educational resources, and self care tools for caregivers who provide the crucial role of ensuring the health and well-being of our veterans. The purpose behind this essential program is to recognize and acknowledge that caregiving can be incredibly demanding at times and that it doesn’t have to be done alone and without support. This program offers a number of services available in and out of the home to help care for the veteran and for the caregiver. Staffed by licensed professionals, VA’s Caregiver Support Line can provide connections to VA services, a Caregiver Support Coordinator at the nearest VA medical center, or to a willing ear to listen and encourage. Caregivers can also participate in monthly telephone education groups, discuss self-care tips and ask questions. Peer Support Mentoring is also available and mentors and mentees communicate using email, telephone, and letter writing. Another aspect of the program, Building Better Caregivers offers a free six-week online workshop for family caregivers, who help each other learn a variety of skills for time and stress management, healthy eating, exercise and dealing with difficult emotions. The Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers offers enhanced support for caregivers of eligible veterans seriously injured in the line of duty on or after September 11, 2001. Enhanced services for eligible participants may include a financial stipend, access to health care insurance, mental health services and counseling, caregiver training, and respite care. RRRP has collaborated with this extraordinary program since 2012 and has linked nearly 35 caregivers with the support they need.
