RRRP client quote of the week:

“Everyone who helped me was very professional & very helpful!  I am truly grateful for the help & service provided!  I have never had so many people who are willing & helpful in regards to finding employment for myself!  You guys are doing a great service for veterans & I will be recommending the IAVA to all of my battle buddies from the Army!  Thank you!”

Trends:

RRRP has seen an uptick this week for inquiries related to unemployment/underemployment, and requests for legal assistance relating to VA recoupment issues, family law, discrimination and general legal advice. RRRP continues to receive GI Bill inquiries from active duty service memebers seeking guidance transfering their Post 9/11 GI BIll benefits, and veterans seeking assistance utilizing VA’s VR&E. Emergency financial assistance needs continue to dominate requests, as many clients are struggling with basic need costs like rent, mortgage, utilities, and vehicle repairs, with an uptick in requests for holiday assistance. Many clients seeking employment support report that they are struggling to find employment due to underlying service-connected mental health issues. We continue to be contacted by veterans seeking assistance submitting their initial VA disability claims or those seeking upgrades, as well as those seeking access to VA general health and mental health services.

Referral Partner Highlight:  Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS)

A trusted RRRP referral partner and one of IAVA’s closest allies, Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) provides support, hope, and community for families grieving the loss of a military loved one. Bonnie Carroll, who also sits on IAVA’s Board of Directors, founded TAPS following the death of her husband, Brigadier General Tom Carroll, who died in an Army C-12 plane crash in 1992. As she grieved the loss of her husband, Bonnie soon realized that there was a lack of resources and support for those grieving a military loss and decided to do something about it. Since 1994, TAPS, the only program of its kind, has assisted more than 70,000 surviving families, casualty officers, and caregivers. TAPS assists the families of our fallen heroes by providing comprehensive case management support, crisis intervention, and peer-based emotional support. TAPS also has a 24/7 National Military Survivor Helpline that provides support and information on how to access available resources. The breadth of their programming includes surviving seminars for adults, youth programs, retreats, expeditions and connections to counseling support and resources as well as help navigating benefits. TAPS’ holistic approach provides support for the entire family and has created a vast community of people that come together so that those suffering a loss are not alone as they walk the journey of grief and loss.
