Branch of Service: US Marine Corps
Years of Service: 2017-2025
Last Rank Held: E5
Military Occupation: Platoon Sergeant

As a Platoon Sergeant, I held a leadership role within an infantry platoon, which typically consists of around 40 soldiers. My responsibilities involved supervising and guiding multiple squads, each led by a Squad Leader, ensuring they were well-trained, disciplined, and ready for missions. I was in charge of the tactical employment of the platoon, assisting the Platoon Leader in planning operations, and making decisions to adapt to the battlefield. I also ensured that logistical needs were met, including equipment maintenance and personnel welfare. A key part of my role was to mentor and develop junior leaders and soldiers, maintaining operational readiness and cohesion within the platoon.

Tell us a little about you outside of the military:

Outside of the military, I enjoy a variety of activities that keep me active and engaged. I’m passionate about hiking, kayaking, and snowboarding, which allow me to connect with nature and stay physically active. Road trips are also a favorite of mine, as they provide an opportunity to explore new places and experience different cultures. When I’m not out exploring, I enjoy reading, particularly non-science fiction books, which offer a great escape and a way to unwind. I value spending time with my loved ones, and I’m constantly learning and growing in both personal and professional

It’s a chance to connect with others who have shared similar experiences, advocate for veteran rights, and give back through outreach, support, and resources. Being part of the IAVA Cavalry allows me to stay involved with a network of like-minded individuals who are committed to improving the lives of veterans and making sure their voices are heard. It aligns with my desire to stay engaged, help others, and continue making a positive impact outside of direct military service.

How did your military experience shape you to be the person you are today?

My military experience shaped me by instilling core values like discipline, leadership, and resilience. Serving in challenging environments taught me the importance of adaptability, problem-solving, and working as part of a team. The leadership roles I held, such as Platoon Sergeant, reinforced the need to take responsibility for both people and mission success, while maintaining a high standard of integrity and accountability. It also gave me a deeper sense of purpose and the importance of community, which I carry into every aspect of my life. The experiences I had in the military continue to influence how I approach challenges and interact with others, making me more focused, determined, and empathetic.

Which one of IAVA’s policy priorities do you believe is the most pressing? Why?

One of the most pressing IAVA policy priorities is improving mental health care for veterans. The transition from military to civilian life can be challenging, and many veterans face mental health struggles, including PTSD, depression, and anxiety. The lack of adequate mental health resources and support can make it even harder for them to reintegrate into society. Ensuring that veterans have access to timely and effective mental health care is critical for their well-being and overall quality of life. It’s a priority that resonates with me because many of my fellow veterans, including myself, have experienced the impacts of mental health challenges, and it’s crucial that we address these issues with the urgency and care they deserve.

Which one of IAVA’s policy priorities do you have the strongest personal connection to? Why?

I have the strongest personal connection to IAVA’s policy priority of improving veteran employment opportunities. Transitioning from military service to civilian life can be incredibly challenging, particularly when it comes to finding meaningful employment that values the skills and experiences gained in the military. I personally understand how difficult it can be to navigate the civilian job market, and I recognize how important it is for veterans to be able to use their unique talents in careers that align with their strengths. Ensuring veterans have the support they need for employment success is a cause I’m deeply passionate about because I’ve seen firsthand how impactful a fulfilling job can be for mental and emotional well-being, as well as financial stability.
