John outside of the military:

I’m a husband and father living in Los Angeles, California where I’ve been working as a Television Writer for the last thirteen years. When I’m not working I enjoy playing guitar, board and video games, and supporting my son’s Cub Scout troop.

John on joining the IAVA Cavalry:

When I made the decision to leave the Army and return to civilian life, I felt like my service was complete and I had paid my toll to the country. Unfortunately, our democracy is under threat, and the response from our elected officials has been for the most part cowardly. The oath I swore still stands, and I am still willing to protect this country in any way I can.

How the military experience affected John’s personal growth:

My experience in Afghanistan opened my eyes to the ways of the world more than any classroom experience ever could have. It completely changed who I am as a person, for both better and worse.

IAVA’s policy priorities that are the most pressing:

Democracy. When our sitting President calls those who serve in the military “suckers” and “losers,” and more than half the elected representatives are happy to go along with such garbage, it’s apparent that we need change at the highest levels in this country and we need it yesterday.

IAVA’s policy priorities with the strongest personal connection for John:

Democracy. Our unit lost four soldiers on our deployment to Afghanistan, and I would be doing all four of their memories a huge disservice if I didn’t do everything in my power to try and make this country align with the vision that they fought and died for.
