Jim outside of the military:

After my military retirement, my priorities shifted toward what truly matters like family, travel, (more recently) my service dog, and finding deeper purpose. Travel, one of my favorite parts of military life, remains a passion that my wife and I share. Exploring new places and cultures gives me fresh perspectives, connects me to the larger human experience, and helps me heal from the stress and trauma of combat and the military. Since leaving the military, my commitment to protecting equality and equal rights for EVERYONE has grown stronger. So, I now dedicate my time to building a world where everyone, especially those overlooked, victimized, or silenced, feels seen, respected, and empowered. It’s not just about hashtags and sharing political memes; it’s about creating honest conversations and meaningful action that leads to lasting change. While cliche, I simply want to leave things better for both today’s veterans and future generations. The world feels more divided than ever, and that only deepens my resolve to be part of something better.

Jim on joining the IAVA Cavalry:

After a 20-year military career with multiple deployments to Afghanistan and Kosovo, I knew my service wasn’t over when I retired. So, I searched for a new personal mission that focused on the real struggles of today’s veterans, and IAVA stood out. They didn’t sugarcoat issues, or act like veterans are just political numbers or props for parades. We are real people, with real needs and struggles, and IAVA understands that. So, joining the Cavalry is my way of getting back into the fight, not with a weapon, but this time using with my voice, experiences, and commitment for real change. Veterans deserve more than handshakes, patted backs, and parades. We need action for mental health, education, jobs, and community support. Applause fades quickly after a parade, but the need for mental health care, education, jobs, and community support doesn’t. I want to be part of the team that creates progress, not pity, and fights for those things. Not just in Washington, D.C., but in every community across the country.

How the military experience affected Jim’s personal growth:

My time in uniform taught me a lot about leadership, responsibility, and sacrifice. But even more than that, it taught me how to be part of a team and to fight for something greater than myself. In combat zones like Afghanistan, I worked with people from all walks of life including Afghan allies, NATO partners, and fellow Americans, and I learned to listen, to earn trust, and to lead and serve with empathy. It exposed me to the extremes of human nature like courage, compassion, and selflessness, as well as witnessing pain, loss, and betrayal. That clarity changed me. It reinforced my belief in service and my duty to speak up for those who can’t. So, now as a veteran, I want to use those experiences, and the communication skills I’ve refined over decades, to advocate for others. It’s not about trying to live the past, but rather using what I have to help shape a better future, especially for the next generation of veterans.

IAVA’s policy priorities that are the most pressing:

All of IAVA’s 2025 priorities matter, but this one stands out to me personally as being really time relevant. We must repeal the outdated 2001 and 2002 AUMFs. It’s 2025, and we’re still sending troops into harm’s way under authorizations meant to be temporary. Every new military conflict deserves its own debate and accountability. Service members and their families deserve that respect. Operating under an endless “blank check” destroys trust between those serving and those who send them to fight and die. War isn’t a political shortcut. It’s a life-changing, often life-ending, decision that that must be taken seriously. So, this is one of the many reasons why I’m committing to IAVA’s mission. They amplify our veteran’s voices and drive real change.

IAVA’s policy priorities with the strongest personal connection for Jim:

Again, while all of IAVA’s 2025 priorities are important, protecting our democracy feels really important to me. I deployed to defend freedoms, and have seen firsthand what the absence of this democracy looks like. But now, watching as some of our democratic values are being disregarded here at home isn’t just political. It’s personal. We took an oath to uphold the Constitution that doesn’t expire. So, the rise in political division and distrust, and abuse of power in politics is alarming. Our adversaries are watching and will take advantage of that chaos. We can’t allow the freedoms we fought for to be weakened from within. We must strengthen democratic institutions and uphold the Constitution and rule of law if we want to truly honor the sacrifices of those who serve.

I’m also committed to supporting our Afghan allies. I served alongside them and saw their courage up close. Their loyalty saved countless American lives, so abandoning them now is a moral failure. We owe them more than gratitude. We owe them safety, respect, and action and accountability from our leaders.
