Veterans Denounce House Passage of SAVE Act

If ‘SAVE Act’ became law, it would create barriers to voting for U.S. troops and their families

Washington, D.C. — Following is a statement from Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) on today’s vote in the U.S. House of Representatives to pass the ‘SAVE Act.’ The bill, if it became law, would cause unnecessary barriers for U.S. troops and their families who are either stationed overseas or want to cast their vote in the location of their home of record instead of the community they may have been ordered to be stationed in in the United States.

“The U.S. House of Representatives today advanced a bill that would create unnecessary barriers to voting for US troops and their families – the very vote that they’re sacrificing so much to protect and defend for the rest of us,” said IAVA CEO and Iraq War veteran, Allison Jaslow. “Once again, our men and women serving honorably in uniform are paying the price for political games being played in Washington. That should bother all of us. But those Members of Congress who voted for the SAVE Act today should be especially ashamed they did so.

“In a recent survey of our members, 74% of IAVA veterans reported dissatisfaction with how democracy is working in the U.S., compared to just 12% who said they were satisfied. Votes like today’s might explain some of that dissatisfaction,” continued Jaslow. “The Senate would be wise to not take action on the flawed SAVE Act – period. However, if it goes to the Senate floor, IAVA will be advising all Senators to vote against this bill that will cause American servicemen and women to jump over unnecessary hurdles just to be able to exercise their right to vote in our elections.”
