RRRP processed 21 new cases this week and provided 12 new referrals for clients. Suicide and mental health, community, and housing and homelessness needs were the top areas clients sought support and assistance with. RRRP served five new clients that were homeless or at imminent risk of homelessness and also had inquiries for emergency financial assistance and guidance with VA disability claims. Clients continue to report a reduction in stress after working with RRRP’s Veteran Transition Managers.

Referral Partner Highlight: Veterans Treatment Court
Veterans Treatment Courts (VTC) are set up to provide specialized support and resources for veterans involved with the criminal justice system. Modeled after mental health and drug courts, VTCs were established to emphasize treatment rather than incarceration. Buffalo Veterans Treatment Court was the very first VTC and was established in 2008 by Judge Russell in Buffalo, NY. This special court was created to give veterans a chance to rehabilitate themselves and avoid criminal punishment. Judge Russell became concerned about the amount of veterans in mental health and drug court so he created VTC to more effectively meet veterans’ unique needs, recognizing that many difficulties sometimes stem from military service. IAVA has had the honor to work closely with Judge Russell’s court and has collaborated with five other VTCs across the country, including several NYC based VTCs, ensuring that RRRP clients have access to this unique and effective program.
