Washington, D.C. — This Memorial Day, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) is calling on all Americans to #GoSilent in honor of the men and women in uniform who lost their lives in defense of our nation. Keeping with their annual tradition, IAVA will hold a nationwide moment of silence at 3 pm local time on May 29.

“Memorial Day is too often treated like another day off, which is why IAVA makes it a priority to raise visibility of this sacred day through our ‘Go Silent’ campaign,” said Allison Jaslow, CEO of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America. “IAVA calls on all Americans to join us by pledging to ‘Go Silent’ on Memorial Day to honor those who’ve made the ultimate sacrifice.”

This year, the leading voice for the Post-9/11 generation of veterans also wants to remind America of those who lost their lives during the Global War on Terror (GWOT). In a war that continues to be waged to this day, GWOT has killed more than 7,000 U.S. troops across two decades – every one of them volunteers.

“As the United States continues to send troops in harm’s way, it’s very possible that our nation’s war against terrorism could claim another life before we reach Memorial Day,” Jaslow continued. “So as we launch #GoSilent, it’s also a good time to remind ourselves of those who continue to step up and sacrifice in order to keep us safe here at home every day.”
