NEW YORK (November 5, 2015) – Leading up to a historic Veterans Day week capped by Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America’s (IAVA) Annual Heroes Gala, IAVA applauds the recent White House announcement awarding the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military award, to retired Army Captain Florent Groberg for conspicuous gallantry while serving in Afghanistan. IAVA joins a grateful nation in commending Captain Groberg’s bravery and heroism and for this highest military honor.

“IAVA congratulates Captain Groberg on this incredible honor,” said IAVA CEO and Founder Paul Rieckhoff. “His leadership and selfless action to subdue a suicide bomber, despite knowing the consequences, exemplifies the commitment our nation’s heroes have to serving our country. Our members are inspired by Groberg’s bravery, selflessness and grit. He is a shining example of the dedication and service that defines military members. His leadership will continue to inspire Americans for generations to come.”

Capt. Groberg will receive the honor for his actions as a Personal Security Detachment Commander for Task Force Mountain Warrior, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division during combat operations in Asadabad, Kunar Province, Afghanistan on August 8, 2012. Groberg survived attacks by two suicide bombers moments apart and was badly wounded as he saved his fellow soldiers in Afghanistan.
