New York, NY – On the eve of the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) honors the veterans, servicemembers, and first responders who bravely risked their lives for others on September 11, 2001 and in the 20 years following. We also pay tribute to the many military families who have sacrificed and who have been the backbone of that service. As the leading veteran service organization for post-9/11 veterans, IAVA was founded to provide support and resources to veterans facing the unique challenges of post-9/11 service.
“The anniversary of 9/11 is a difficult day of reflection across the globe, especially in the veteran and first responder communities, as we all continue to endure the pain, loss, and grief of those lost as a result of the September 11th attacks,” said IAVA CEO Jeremy Butler. “We must also continue to recognize those who risk their lives everyday to defend our freedom. Not a day goes by where I don’t think of the millions of people who decided to serve our country after the attacks, and I thank them for their commitment to keeping our country safe.”
To mark the anniversary, IAVA is participating in a number of public and private events to include an official wreath laying at the Pentagon and ceremony at the Women in Military Service for America Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery this week, the annual Tunnel to Towers race events in New York and across the country that honor the sacrifice of firefighter Stephen Siller who laid down his life to save others on September 11, 2001, and joining The Mission Continues’ Operation Enduring Service for service projects across the country. Find an event near you at the links above. We invite you to share your plans and experiences with the military and veteran community on social media using #911IAVA2021
In response to the U.S. military’s withdrawal from Afghanistan, IAVA recognizes that many veterans are struggling, and that the 20th anniversary of 9/11 may also be a trigger. IAVA will continue to provide support and resources for veterans during these challenging times.
IAVA’s flagship program, the Quick Reaction Force (QRF), offers 24/7 confidential peer-to-peer support, comprehensive care management and resource connections for all veterans and their families. The full scope of the program and ways to connect to QRF can be found here.
IAVA is the voice for the post-9/11 veteran generation. With over 425,000 veterans and allies nationwide, IAVA is the leader in non-partisan veteran advocacy and public awareness. We drive historic impacts for veterans and IAVA’s programs are second to none. Any veteran or family member in need can reach out to IAVA’s Quick Reaction Force at quickreactionforce.org or 855-91RAPID (855-917-2743) to be connected promptly with a veteran care manager who will assist.
