#AdvocacyUpdate: House VA Committee News; IAVA Meets with New VA Secretary
This week IAVA’s DC team met with several offices from the House Armed Services Committee (HASC) and House Veterans Affairs Committee (HVAC) to discuss our priorities for 2021.
HVAC also met to announce new members and Subcommittee leadership, as well to consider and pass the Committee’s portion of the next COVID-19 relief package, the American Rescue Plan. Following IAVA’s advocacy, the legislation will establish a new one-year rapid retraining program for veterans who have lost their jobs due to the pandemic. The new benefit also includes a generous housing benefit. Read more about this legislation HERE.
The VA officially has a new secretary as Denis McDonough was sworn in on Monday. McDonough is a former White House chief-of-staff and the second non-veteran to hold the position. Following his swearing-in, IAVA’s Travis Horr attended a Zoom meeting McDonough held with leaders from Student Veterans of America, Team RWB, Team Rubicon, and The Mission Continues, discuss new initiatives, increasing communications with VA and veterans, and changes that can be made following the transfer of power to the Biden administration.
