NEW YORK, NY (October 28, 2016) –  Today, Friday October 28, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) Senior Military Fellow, Jeremy Butler, will testify before the New York City Council Committee on Veterans in New York City at 1:00 p.m. ET in favor of Resolution 1196-2016, calling for Congress to pass the Fairness for Veterans Act (H.R. 4683/ S.1567).

The Fairness for Veterans Act targets those veterans who received an other than honorable – or “bad paper” discharge.  In many cases these veterans have undiagnosed or untreated psychological injury. This legislative fix will ensure Discharge Review Boards give liberal consideration to petitions for changes to an other than honorable discharge status if a servicemember has PTSD, TBI, or related conditions in connection with their military service. It also extends the policy to military sexual trauma.

Butler’s testimony will discuss the benefits of the Fairness for Veterans Act to the post-9/11 generation of veterans and urge congressional action on this critical issue.
