On the 18th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), the leading post-9/11 veteran empowerment organization, honored the veterans, service members, and first responders whose courage and sacrifice saved countless lives on September 11, 2001 and in the eighteen years following. 

 “The anniversary of 9/11 is a somber day of reflection for many in the veteran community, evoking complicated feelings of pain and loss but also purpose and pride in our service; to the nation, today is a reminder that we owe our freedom to veterans, service members, and first responders who defend it with their lives,” said IAVA CEO Jeremy Butler. “Millions of men and women signed up to serve this country, specifically inspired by the events on September 11, 2001; today and every day, we thank them for their commitment to keeping our country safe.”

“IAVA was born out of necessity, to serve the post-9/11 veteran community and elevate the distinct priorities, challenges, and stories of a generation of service members whose service is defined by the events of September 11, 2001. Together, we’ve defended veteran education benefits, combatted veteran suicide, raised the curtain on sexism in the military and more. Today, we pause to reflect on and remember the day that changed all of our lives – but tomorrow, we get back to work to ensure that every veteran gets the support, resources, and  recognition they deserve.”
