Read: Weekly #SheWhoBorneTheBattle Sitrep – April 7

It’s been a busy week on Capitol Hill and we spent most of it enlisting supporters for our #SheWhoBorneTheBattle campaign. Most Members of Congress have left town for recess over the next two weeks, but we’ll continue working with their offices to get them on board with our campaign. Here’s a quick run down of this week’s policy team highlights:

  • IAVA Political and Intergovernmental Affairs Director, Melissa Bryant, delivered testimony at the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee (HVAC) hearing regarding improvements needed at the VA’s Veterans Crisis Line (See her full testimony for the record).
  • IAVA Legislative Director, Tom Porter, joined President and Mrs. Trump, Vice President and Mrs. Pence, other veterans organizations at The White House to welcome Wounded Warriors taking part in the annual Soldier Ride biking event.
  • Melissa Bryant and IAVA Policy Intern, Antoine Campbell, attended The Military Coalition monthly meeting where she gained the support of several Veteran and Military Service Organizations for the Deborah Sampson Act to recognize the service of women veterans.
  • April 6 was the centennial of U.S. involvement in World War I. IAVA has lent our support to the World War I Centennial Commission to remember the fallen before us, including the many women who served. Important to note that WWI was the first time in U.S. history that women were able to enlist into the regular armed forces via the Navy.
  • 628 IAVA member emails sent to Capitol Hill in support of #SheWhoBorneTheBattle. Be number 629 by going to our Take Action page and contacting your Members of Congress.
