Prepare Veterans for Employment by Protecting Education Benefits

The Post-9/11 GI Bill is one of the most significant achievements for veterans in the last 50 years. Through October 2011, almost a million veterans and their family members had used or were using the program to pursue higher or technical education or training in a trade. IAVA led the fight for the Post-9/11 GI Bill from its conception and we continue to fight to maintain its viability and value.

One of the single greatest threats to the success and future of the GI Bill is the inability to prevent fraud, particularly in the realm of for-profit schools. IAVA recognizes that the majority of for-profit schools are honest actors and that they provide an invaluable resource for many military members and veterans who do not wish to pursue a traditional education. However, we must ensure that the actions of a few bad apples do not threaten the future of an entire generation.  IAVA is committed to ensuring that America’s fighting men and women can make full use of the benefits they earned through years of committed service to receive education and training that will prepare them for meaningful careers in the civilian world. We believe that a three-pronged approach consisting of data collection (collecting information on schools and programs), education counseling to help veterans evaluate their choices and market-based reforms is the best course of action to address the issue of fraud, waste and abuse. We must also ensure that veterans succeed once they are in school and as they prepare to transition into the job market. IAVA maintains that these simple, common-sense measures will protect the best investment in job training and creation Americans have made in the New Greatest Generation.
