IAVA Vets Get Ahead with StreetWise Partners!

On Saturday, May 14, New York City-area IAVA member veterans teamed up with StreetWise Partners and Stanford University alumni volunteers to receive one-on-one resume training. New veterans face a 10.9% unemployment rate and unique challenges when they return home. These workshops and opportunities are a critical resource as vets transition out of the military and into the civilian workforce.  

Working with volunteers from a variety of industries, IAVA member vets focused on how to best communicate transferable skills gained from the military to prospective employers. Vets were also encouraged to think about everything from language skills to other technical and soft skills they gained while serving in the armed forces.  

StreetWise Partners is a nonprofit organization that provides effective and free job training programs for highly motivated people who face barriers to employment. By encouraging people to think about their career, and not just their next job, StreetWise is able to provide the tools and support required to set and achieve career goals.   

This workshop is part of IAVA's ongoing efforts to address and reverse the consistently high unemployment rate for OIF/OEF/OND veterans. No veteran should come home from Iraq and Afghanistan to an unemployment check. But nearly 300,000 have. The unemployment rate for new veterans has doubled in the last five years and continues to skyrocket.
