IAVA HandsOn in the Bay Area
May 9 2012
On May 3rd in San Francisco, IAVA local leaders and Storm the Hill 2012 Alumni, Jessi Tseng and Mike Liguori joined Levi's on their annual company service day. This event, which is organized by HandsOn Bay Area (HOBA), brings employees and veterans together to sort through a warehouse of goods that are to be given to local area vets in need. After sorting for hours, more than 60 boxes of new and lightly used clothing was turned over to IAVA and two other local veterans nonprofits. That means nearly 1,000 lbs of clothing in 20+ boxes are coming to IAVA Bay Area members in a few short weeks.
With the service day complete, Jessi and Mike enjoyed an after-party hosted by Levi's for it's employees. The party included a live band, several games, and a smorgasboard of food for the weary sorters. They were lucky enough to hear Levi's President and CEO Chip Bergh speak about what service in the local community means and how each employee should embrace that responsibility.
Mike and Jessi were able to speak with Mr. Bergh and during this conversation, Mr. Bergh revealed he was also a veteran who joined just after the Vietnam War. This is yet another reminder that skills learned in the military translate to success in the civilian world.
Sir, we commend you on your service and want to sincerely thank you for helping veterans in need with this year's company service day. We hope to be a part of it again next year!
All in all, it was a solid day of representation from our Bay Area local leaders and once again illustrates our vets continue to serve.
In just the last year, IAVA has connected hundreds of veterans with employers through innovative career fairs, helped over 10,000 veterans go to college on the New GI Bill, and provided mental health support to over 50,000 veterans—all at no cost to Member Veterans. Programs like these are only made possible through your generous support. Fight for those who fought for us and help us keep these resources and benefits completely free for new veterans and their families. DONATE >>
