Carrier Classic a Slam Dunk for IAVA Vets
November 15 2011

As Americans banded together across the country on Veterans Day, IAVA and Miller High Life sent 16 IAVA member veterans and their guests to watch the First Annual Carrier Classic on the flight deck of the USS Carl Vinson in San Diego Harbor.

The Carrier Classic was a planned event by the NCAA, with the UNC Tarheels facing off against the Michigan State Spartans. The stadium was built on the flight deck of the USS Carl Vinson, the same aircraft carrier that participated in the mission against Osama bin Laden in May 2011. With seating for only 600, it was a great opportunity for IAVA member veterans to get the recognition and relaxation they deserve.
Some of the biggest stars from Hollywood and professional sports were in attendance, including Brooklyn Decker, Magic Johnson and ex-Los Angeles Laker James Worthy. The evening also included musical performances from Five For Fighting and Billy Currington. Navy veteran and R&B artist B. Taylor performed the National Anthem.
The two teams were going up in a re-match of their historic 2009 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship game, when UNC beat Michigan State 89-72. Ultimately, the Tar Heels repeated their victory over the Spartans 67-55. The two teams also wore camouflage-themed uniforms, which they later gave away to veterans attending the game.
President Obama and the First Lady were also in attendance to watch the game and to honor the service of the attending troops and veterans.

During his remarks, the President reminded attendees that the gratitude for members of the Armed Forces does not stop when they take off their uniform: “When they come home, part of the long line of those who defended our freedom, we have a sacred trust to make sure that they understand how much we appreciate what they do. And that's not just on Veterans Day. That is every day of every year where we salute them and we say thank you for making the sacrifices, and for their families' sacrifices, on our behalf.”
The President also emphasized the importance of supporting veterans as they transition out of the military and back into civilian life.
