IAVA Unveils "Apps for Heroes" with Dr. Jill Biden, Code for America
January 18

On January 18th, IAVA Member Veterans from San Francisco helped unveil "Apps for Heroes" with Dr. Jill Biden at a special Joining Forces event hosted by Code for America. In their intimate San Francisco offices, forty technology experts, three IAVA members and Second Lady Dr. Jill Biden gathered to hear the innovative ways the technology sector is helping returning veterans transition to civilian life.
Whether it was hearing how Fidelis is planning to launch an online education and career mentorship service geared towards veterans or how LinkedIn is focused on alleviating the high veteran unemployment rate with their new job search programs, IAVA members in attendance knew these tech firms were prepared to assist them to be just as successful back home as they were running missions in Iraq or Afghanistan.

While on paper the night may have been about the technology sectors efforts to aid veterans in the transition, it mean a lot more for a couple IAVA members. Ann Weeby, a proud IAVA member not only had the opportunity introduce Dr. Jill Biden, but to also share her experiences in the military and transition into civilian life. There was a definite sense of admiration and respect for her in the room, as the CEO’s and representative from the tech-companies were now able to put a face to the population they were targeting to serve.
At the end of the night, IAVA member Jessi Tseng summed it up best, “The efforts from the White House and attendees of the event to assist veterans were inspiring. I hope IAVA members will take advantage of the many services available to them while keeping an eye out for more in the future.”
