Urgent: Stand with IAVA on H.R. 1383

In response to today's pressure, IAVA has just received good news that the Department of Veterans Affairs has chimed in on the Restoring GI Bill Fairness Act of 2011 [H.R. 1383] after talks with the House Veterans Affairs Committee. Read more...

On Monday, the House Veterans Affairs Committee will vote on a version of the Restoring GI Bill Fairness Act of 2011 [H.R. 1383], also known as the “grandfather clause,” which was amended last week by Senate Veterans Affairs Committee Chairman Patty Murray.

IAVA opposes passage of this version of the  "grandfather clause" because it would exclude:

  • - veterans who started in the spring 2011 semester since it lists an inclusion date of January 4th, 2011
  • - out-of-state student-veterans currently attending public institutions
  • - veterans currently enrolled in high-fee programs

Stand with IAVA by sending an email below to House Veterans Affairs Committee Chairman Jeff Miller urging the House to pass an amendment to ensure no deserving veteran is left behind in financial distress when New GI Bill 2.0 goes into effect next Monday, August 1st.

Letter to Chairman Miller

Chairman Miller,

Thank you for your work protecting my GI Bill benefits.  I just learned that an amended version of your bill the Restoring GI Bill Fairness Act of 2011 [H.R. 1383]  is scheduled for Committee vote on Monday afternoon.  As an IAVA Member, I am deeply concerned about the new eligibility date --January 4, 2011-- that the Senate amended late last week. Your original date April 1, 2011 was fair and will protect the education and finances of hundreds of student-veterans.

I urge you to protect the intent of H.R. 1383 by changing the eligibility date back to April 1, 2011 and to send the legislation back to the Senate before August 1st.

Hundreds of deserving veterans nationwide depend on this immediate action so they can complete their college degrees and avoid financial distress.

Thank you for your support.
