Sergeant Meyer to be Awarded Medal of Honor
Historic Day for Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans as Meyer Becomes First Living Marine Since Vietnam to be Awarded Nation's Highest Honor
“Amid the presidential debates dominating the airwaves, Sergeant Dakota Meyer will receive our nation’s highest military honor later today. His bravery under fire and unflinching commitment to leave no fallen comrade behind embodies the ethos of this New Greatest Generation,” said IAVA Founder and Executive Director Paul Rieckhoff. “As we mark the 10th anniversary of 9/11 this week, Sergeant Meyer, and IAVA Member Veteran, is a remarkable example of the leadership our troops continue to demonstrate a decade into war. To help others, he put aside his personal fears in an act of selflessness - an important lesson for all Americans.
This historic ceremony must also be a reminder to the country that the effects of these wars don’t end on the battlefield. Each of the over 2.3 million Iraq and Afghanistan veterans have unique stories to share from the frontlines. And they all need to know our country has their back when they get home. It’s critical that we stay focused on getting them the support and resources required to fully cultivate our Next Greatest Generation. We know Sergeant Meyer did everything in his power to get to those in need. It’s time for Americans everywhere to follow his lead.”
