KFOX-14: New Veteran Unemployment Hits Record High

February 8

IAVA's Legislative Associate Tim Embree spoke to KFOX-14 in El Paso to highlight the urgency of the unemployment crisis facing veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan.  In January, the jobless rate amongst Iraq and Afghanistan-era veterans climbed to 15.2 percent- up from just 11.7 percent in December- as the national rate declined. IAVA Legislative Associate Tim Embree joined Bob Moon on Marketplace to discuss necessary fixes to the new GI Bill and problems veterans have transitioning into the workforce after combat.  Upgrading the GI Bill package is one of IAVA's top legislative priorities in 2010.

IAVA Legislative Associate Tim Embree was quoted in a piece about shortcomings in the federal hiring process, especially when it comes to veterans. He noted that IAVA has called for an investigation into direct hiring programs "to determine whether these programs are being used to avoid the hiring of veterans in the federal government."
