MSNBC: Wes Moore discusses Iraq and his book

IAVA Board Member, critically-acclaimed author, Rhodes Scholar, and Afghanistan veteran Wes Moore joined Andrea Mitchell on MSNBC to discuss the drawdown of combat operations in Iraq as well as his best-selling book, "The Other Wes Moore." You can learn more about his book here.

 


YES Network: Behind the Scenes of the Miller High Life Commercial Shoot

July 9

During a recent New York Yankees game, the YES Network highlighted the partnership between IAVA and Miller High Life and showed behind the scenes footage of the first commercial of the campaign, starring IAVA staff members Adam Bryant, Cara Hammer, and Miller High Life Spokesperson Windell Middlebrooks. The campaign launched on the Fourth of July at the San Diego Padres game where nearly 1000 veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan and their families came out to celebrate the holiday and commemorate the historic launch.

 


Mashable: 5 Tips for Creating Non-Profit Online Communities

Leading social media blog Mashable, highlighted IAVA in a piece on non-profits using a variety of social tools to foster community. IAVA was featured for it’s pioneering use of a white label community to create a private social space exclusively for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans.

 


Fox: New York Veterans Day Parade

November 12

IAVA members were among the 27,000 members of the Armed Forces participating in Wednesday’s Veterans Day Parade through New York City. In this Fox 5 News segment prior to the parade, IAVA Project Coordinator and Iraq and Afghanistan Veteran Jennifer Hunt and IAVA Member Chris Goldsmith, shared their thoughts on participating in one of the nation’s largest and oldest Veterans Day parades.

 


The Philadelphia Inquirer: Web Site Helps Welcome Vets Home

Wall Street Journal: 'Sit! Stay! Snuggle!': An Iraq Vet Finds His Dog Tuesday

Marine Corps Times: House Moves to Tighten Rules on Burn Pits

The Marine Corps Times recently reported that the House of Representatives passed a provision in its version of the 2010 defense authorization bill that would prohibit open-air burn pits from operating for longer than 12 months in Iraq and Afghanistan.  The IAVA has officially endorsed the provision, which would help to ensure that deployed troops are not exposed to the dangerous toxins associated with burn pit fumes:

 


Army Times: Bill Would Let Troops Cancel More Contracts

June 22

The Army Times has cited Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America as supporters of the Helping Active Duty Deployed Act drafted by Rep. Gerald Connelly, D-Va.  The bill, known in the house as HR 2874, would expand the rights of service members and families to avoid financial penalties incurred from deployments. “It is unconscionable that members of our armed forces who put their lives on the line to protect our freedom are charged early termination penalties when facing deployment or change of station", Connelly said.
