Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) is the nation’s first and largest group for veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. IAVA is a non-profit, nonpartisan organization and has more than 200,000 active Member Veterans and supporters in all 50 states. Founded in 2004 by Iraq veteran Paul Rieckhoff, IAVA is staffed by both veterans and non-veterans. IAVA is a growing organization with increasing notoriety in the nonprofit, government, media, veteran service and business communities. The organization advocates on behalf of America’s newest generation of troops, veterans and their families.

IAVA is an exceptionally dynamic working environment that offers staff a unique opportunity to become involved with the most important issues facing the nation. Based in our New York City headquarters, we are seeking a Communications Director.

S/he will oversee all media efforts for the organization. This position offers an extraordinary opportunity to be a key architect in the development and implementation of nationwide communications campaigns. S/he will also have the opportunity to leverage national press relationships to gain coverage and generate public awareness around the most pressing issues facing Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. At the outset, s/he will manage a team of four communications professionals.

This position will be primarily focused on crafting communication strategies around all organizational campaigns, maximizing the visibility of IAVA in the national media space and coordinating with the policy team on leveraging media around key policy and issue related campaigns. Key tasks will include actively pushing IAVA and our issues in the media, maintaining high level media contacts, drafting of press releases, media advisories, opinion pieces, blogs and content for organizational social media platforms. This position will also help with writing speeches and putting together press conferences/other high-level media events for all IAVA leadership and spokespeople.

Building on IAVA’s reputation as a leading source for first hand information about the issues facing U.S. troops and veterans, the Communications Director will be expected to inject the organization’s principles and spokespeople into the national conversation about the current conflicts and the issues acing this newest generation of veterans.

Responsibilities

  • Creating strategic media plans for key organizational campaigns;
  • Integrating online and new media strategies into overall communications strategy;
  • Executing rapid response for breaking news stories;.
  • Maintaining high level press relationships and creating new press relationships;
  • Creating and maintaining systems for tracking and reporting media placement, contacts and
    spokespeople;
  • Proactively pitching the media and generating coverage for the organization;
  • Liaising with the Executive Office on speeches, talking points and high level presentations;
  • Overseeing the creation of press releases, media advisories, opinion pieces, blogs;
  • Drafting all internal messaging and talking points.

Qualifications

This is a job of significant responsibility. The successful candidate will have a strong record of accomplishment in the communications field and experience working with both new and traditional media. An individual with a background in the news, politics, government or public relations worlds is preferred. This individual will manage a team of communications professionals and must have excellent management and leadership skills. This person must be an EXCELLENT writer and proficient in writing in several mediums—ranging from press releases to opinion pieces. A college degree is required.

Traits:

The right candidate must be media savvy, quick-thinking, articulate, well-read, strategic, comfortable working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment and a team-player. S/he must be a long term planner and effective at short term rapid planning and crisis response. S/he should have a strong familiarity with the news and key players in the news industry. A good understanding of politics and Capitol Hill is a must. An understanding of on and offline marketing and advertising are pluses.

  • Content creation: Create and maintain interactive, inspiring and interesting content across all of our web properties to keep our members and supporters engaged in our day-to-day work, as well as our major organizational priorities and campaigns.
  • Graphic design: Use IAVA’s style and branding to create graphics and headers for email communication and pages within IAVA.org.
  • Video editing: We’re regularly producing short web-videos on a tight timeline, and we need someone who can take it up a notch, from start to finish.
  • Analytics: Become the go-to team member on all things analytics – from running weekly reports to tracking what content performed the best and creating new content based on those best practices.

Veteran Support Associate. New York, NY. Full-time.

IAVA seeks an outgoing, highly organized, innovative candidate to join our team as our Veteran Support Associate. This is a full time position based in New York City.

The Veteran Support Associate will play a critical role in helping IAVA Veteran Members. This person will help resolve problems related to housing, legal issues, employment, physical/mental health, substance abuse, domestic violence, financial planning, etc by referring OIF/OEF veterans and their families to the appropriate services.  Thousands of vets connect with or through IAVA every day, and the Veteran Support Associate will be a major part of those interactions, helping to support and empower individual vets to improve their lives. This job is ideal for someone with a background in case work/ social work, tremendous empathy and a deep commitment to serving those who served our country. Please note that this is not a direct casework position—IAVA does not provide direct casework services.

  • Assist in evaluation of resources to which veterans are referred
  • Maintain knowledge of regulations that impact new veterans and their families 
  • Maintain extensive understanding of resources available (locally and nationally)
  • Strategize with Membership Director to set departmental priorities
  • Attend trainings offered by federal, state and local agencies
  • Provide Membership Director with casework reports on a weekly basis

This position requires a candidate who can perform well under high-pressure, fast-paced conditions. Occasional travel required. Social work degrees preferred.

Information Technology Manager. New York, NY. Full-time.

IAVA is seeking an experienced, committed; customer-service oriented Information Technology Manager. The I.T. Manager will provide critical management of software, hardware and network support for the organization in both the NYC Headquarters and DC Office. Responsibilities include but are not limited to network maintenance, server administration, VOIP management, direct computer hardware/software support, IT security, and troubleshooting. The I.T. Manager will also advise the Director of Operations regarding technology and information systems selection, implementation, maintenance, and policies. The I.T. Manager is a regular full-time position based in the New York City Headquarters, reporting to the Director of Operations.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manage daily I.T. operations under the direction of the Director of Operations
  • Respond to, and support, IT needs of 30+ staff in consultation with the Director of Operations.
  • Quickly and efficiently determine cause of computer problems and resolve (hardware, software, user access, etc.)
  • Oversee the operations, performance and security of networks and systems, including IAVA’s technology vendors 
  • Make implementation recommendations to the Director of Operations regarding systems, security, performance and current and future needs
  • Develop computer information resources, including upgrading email and network management and providing for disaster recovery and data security and control
  • Manage the integration of I.T. operations, computer hardware, operating systems, communications, and software applications
  • Communicate, and administer standard I.T. operating procedures and policies
  • Configure and test computer and network hardware and software
  • Recommend changes to improve systems and network configurations, and determine hardware or software requirements related to such changes
  • Direct implementation and execution of new or upgraded information systems via well-defined plans including procedures, deadlines, and accountability
  • Keep abreast of trends, technologies, regulations, and initiatives within the I.T. field to ensure effectiveness and compliance, as well as timely advice and recommendations to the organization
  • Performs other duties as assigned
 

Qualification, Skills and Knowledge Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Computer Science, Information Systems/Technology, Business Administration or other related field 
  • 2 – 5 years’ experience in an information technology position with significant responsibilities
  • Experience in I.T. planning and execution
  • Familiarity with networking principals, setup, and configuration
  • Knowledge of business processes, budgeting, and operations
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills 
  • Capable of multitasking and prioritizing jobs

Salesforce Administrator. New York, NY. Full-time.

IAVA seeks a technically sound, highly organized, and motivated candidate to join our team as our Salesforce Administrator. This is a full time position based in New York City.

IAVA has established itself as an innovator in the non-profit sector, largely thanks to our leverage of the Force.com platform. We’re looking to take our technology strategy to the next level, and are looking for the right Salesforce administrator to manage our CRM system. This individual will work hand in hand with the Information Systems Architect as the technical expert, executing on the day-to-day maintenance and improvement of our existing CRM platform. S/he will need to be extremely flexible and able to prioritize & respond to training/support requests from a staff of 40 individuals across 2 offices. The ideal candidate for this position is someone who is looking to help build the technical backbone of a social movement, and is comfortable working in an extremely high-paced, reactive and startup environment.

Responsibilities: 

  • Develop fields, objects, validation rules, triggers, approval processes, and custom code to address and improve new and existing business needs
  • Update and maintain IAVA’s Salesforce user role/profile hierarchy in order for maximum compatibility with existing business processes and security requirements
  • Drive the migration of any and all data currently residing in legacy systems and/or otherwise obsolete data sources (e.g. spreadsheets)
  • Manage system and data integrity by establishing end-user best practices, leveraging administrative tools and employing regression testing
  • Oversee the change management/feature request/support backlog and work with the CIO to prioritize and execute on it
  • Compose documentation for both training and system architecture purposes

Minimum qualifications:

  • 2+ years experience as a Salesforce administrator and/or developer, with direct experience supporting end-users
  • Experience with software design, development, implementation, and production support
  • Fluency in Apex, Java, and VisualForce
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines, handle and prioritize multiple simultaneous requests, manage laterally and upwards, and do it all with a professional and courteous attitude
  • Demonstrated ability to provide instruction to audiences of varying technical backgrounds
  • Excellent Microsoft Office, Windows/Mac OSX, and Google Apps skills
  • A passion and commitment to serving this generation of veterans 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A bachelors or advanced degree in computer science or information systems
  • Salesforce.com Administrator Certification
  • Basic experience with HTML, CSS and content management systems (we use Drupal)
  • Knowledge of other software/web development languages and protocols, including but not limited to: SQL, Ruby on Rails, HTML5, REST and SOAP services, etc.
  • Knowledge of Agile development philosophy and methods
  • Experience managing vendors/partners to develop software applications externally
  • A background working in or with the non-profit sector
  • A breadth and depth of knowledge and interest in the history and future of database management, cloud computing, and web development

Legislative Associate. Washington, DC. Full-time.

Do you have what it takes?  IAVA is looking for a motivated individual to be the face, voice, (and sometimes boot) of veterans on Capitol Hill.  Our elite legislative team has been instrumental in the most significant veterans advocacy victories coming out of Congress.  If you think you can hang, you could become a major part of IAVA’s presence in Washington DC. 

As a Legislative Associate, you will be on the front lines of veterans’ advocacy.  You will be expected to build relationships with Congressional offices, coordinate with allied advocacy organizations and interface with multiple agencies with in the Executive Branch to include the White House, Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs.  You will be primarily responsible for becoming an expert in your assigned fields by researching and tracking new legislation relating to IAVA’s legislative goals.  You will be expected to frequently communicate with Congress via events and Congressional Hearings. As a force in the media you will help IAVA bring our issues out of the beltway and into the consciousness of the American public.  All candidates must have a commitment to the goals of IAVA. 

 

Experience (at least one of the following):

  • Two years of experience in advocacy, on Capitol Hill, or with/within the federal government, or in a related field.
  • Two years of experience in State or Municipal government dealing with veterans’ affairs or related issues.
  • Two years of experience working within the Federal Government working on veteran related programs or agencies.
  • Extensive experience working on National or State campaigns.  
  • Experience writing memorandum and briefing materials for principles.

Skills (all of the following):

  • Working knowledge of the legislative process to include legislative analysis, political acumen, and the procedures of Congress.
  • Clear, thoughtful, precise, and quick writing skills.
  • A strong facility with public speaking and media.

Research Coordinator. Washington, D.C. Full-time.

Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) is the nation's first and largest group for veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Founded in 2004 by an Iraq veteran, IAVA is a young, dynamic nonprofit focused on awareness, advocacy and assistance for the 2.2 million men and women returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with over 200,000 veteran members and grassroots supporters in 50 states. 

IAVA is seeking a highly effective hard worker to join our research team. The position, which will answer directly to the Senior Research Associate, is entry-level and ideal for a rising research super star. If you are detail oriented, ambitious, and want to learn from the best about how to study issues and turn them into change in DC, this job could be your shot. The Research Coordinator will track and analyze issues critical to veterans and help research and write Issue Reports, white papers, memos, blogs and more. IAVA’s influential Issue Reports are often cited by the media and used extensively on Capitol Hill. The Research Coordinator will join a growing research staff, and an energetic, highly visible team, helping win important battles on Capitol Hill and around the country.

IAVA’s Policy Department researches the diverse array of issues confronting the newest generation of veterans and offers public policy solutions to these challenges. Some of the major research team projects coming up this year include:

  • Thinking through how to set veterans up for success on college and university campuses
    • Analyzing the reasons for high new veteran unemployment and possible solutions
      • Understanding, quantifying and qualifying the many unknowns about today’s veterans (who they are, where they live, what they need and want)
        • Analyzing the results of our member survey to define the challenges of today’s veterans
