Upgrades to VA's eBenefits Tool
Posted by Christina Roof on October 18 2012

VA Under Secretary for Benefits BG. Allison Hickey (ret.) has been leading the development of the VA’s eBenefits tool: a useful product for veterans of all generations to track and apply for VA benefits online.

Here’s the BLUF on eBenefits and how it can work for you:

What is it?

eBenefits is an online portal where veterans, servicemembers and their families can quickly access a wide array of tools. From the portal, you can download your DD-214, check the status of your disability claim, research information on health conditions and the resources available to you through the VA system.

How do I sign up?

The guided account sign up will walk you through the online registration process. You will be assigned an account based on what kinds of services you want to access through eBenefits. Currently, eBenefits has three different types of accounts: “Anonymous” (no need to login, very little access), “Basic” (login, limited access) and “Premium” (login, unlimited access). And you can always get help from eBenefits Technical Support Staff by calling 1-800-983-0937 between 8am and 8pm ET.

Who can use eBenefits?

Veterans, servicemembers, spouses, survivors, retirees and dependents can all open eBenefits accounts. The type of account you receive will be based on your status or relationship to the veteran or servicemember. For more information please visit: https://www.ebenefits.va.gov/ebenefits-portal/ebenefits.portal.

What features does eBenefits currently offer?

eBenefits has over 50 features and tools that will make it easier to track your health care and other VA benefits. You can access tools to apply for VA benefits, order medical equipment and even search for employment. You can also maintain an updated calendar of your medical care and receive reminders about upcoming appointments, transfer your education benefits to a dependent or request official military personnel records.

Will I be able to see my DoD records through eBenefits?

You will be able to access some of your DoD records. eBenefits allows you to view things like TriCare information and gives you access to the DEERS system. VA and DoD are still working to provide you with more access to your DoD records, so remember to check the website regularly for new options.

For more information, to enroll or to check out the eBenefits portal, click here. IAVA will continue to keep you updated on eBenefits and other new tools.
