Update: VA to Issue Emergency GI Bill Checks
Posted by Patrick Campbell on October 1 2009

The VA has responded and some relief may be in sight.

Over the last week, IAVA has put significant pressure on the VA to get delayed GI Bill payments out to students. After hearing from us and from veterans across the country who were struggling because of delayed payments, they're instituting a stop-gap measure.

Starting this Friday, October 2, the VA will be issuing emergency checks for the hundreds of thousands of veterans who still haven't received education benefits from the new GI Bill.

How can you claim your check? Bring a government-issued photo ID and proof that you're enrolled in school to your nearest VA Benefits Office. Click here to find the office closest to you. If you need help getting to your local office, call your nearest VA medical center and ask for the Volunteer Transportation Coordinator.

If you need a check but can't make it to an office, you can apply online at www.advancepay.gibill.va.gov.

This isn't a permanent solution, but for now, it may help student veterans focus on classes, instead of on paying bills.

If you need financial help beyond what the VA is providing, please click here to connect with our friends at USA Cares. They may be able to help you and your family get through this tough time.

Here in Washington, DC, and around the country, IAVA will continue to press the VA to streamline this process and ensure there are no delays in future years. And we'll need your help by continuing to stay involved in IAVA- and by telling your friends to join us.

Be sure you're getting the latest news on the GI Bill by visiting www.NewGIBill.org every day.
