UPDATE: Pentagon will Restore Education Grants for Spouses

The Military Spouse Career Advancement Account (MCAA) program grants military spouses $6,000 towards university tuition, career training or professional certification. This phenomenal program helps military spouses adapt their career when moving to new surroundings or a new town. Unfortunately, the program was unexpectedly halted by the Department of Defense (DoD) because of its unanticipated overwhelming popularity. Like Cash for Clunkers, the federal government nearly ran out of money to pay for it.
Thankfully, the program has been reinstated.
First Lady Michelle Obama and Senator Kay Hagan, who have both been champions of this program and military families in general, recognized there are thousands of military spouses, registered for classes, who won’t receive the check they were promised and pressed the DoD to reinstitute the program.
IAVA is pleased that the program will be restored for the 136,000 spouses currently enrolled in the program. The program is currently capped at these 136,000 spouses. IAVA is calling on the DoD to remove the cap and open this program to all military spouses. Military families have more stress on their shoulders than most Americans will ever know, and programs like this must be funded to help all spouses of our service members.
