For almost five decades, Roger Waters has been known as a pioneering musician, but in recent years he's taken on a new role as an outspoken champion for the veterans community.
The Pink Floyd founder was honored with Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America's (IAVA) first ever Artistic Leadership Award at its Sixth Annual Heroes Gala on November 13 in New York City for his demonstrated commitment and dedication to recognizing the sacrifices of veterans worldwide.

Taking the stage after a standing ovation, Waters accepted his award with great gratitude.
"I'm not sure that I've ever been honored ever by anyone for anything, so to be honored here tonight by you guys is very moving," he said.
Waters, an Englishman whose father died while serving in the British Army during World War II, has emerged as a powerful advocate for the veterans movement over the years.
During groundbreaking performances of "The Wall Live," names and photographs of soldiers and civilians who have lost their lives in armed conflicts flash across massive screens, providing a sobering reminder of the costs of war. At every show around the world, Waters welcomes small groups of veterans backstage to hear their stories and thank them for their service. He's also helped veterans rekindle their passion for life through music by forming a band comprised of wounded warriors at Walter Reed National Medical Center. Waters and the band have performed at charity events such as the recent Stand Up For Heroes benefit hosted by the Bob Woodruff Foundation.
Following his remarks, Waters delivered a performance of "Flickering Flame," a song he first recorded in 2002.
IAVA is proud to have Roger Waters as the first recipient of its Artistic Leadership Award.
