Senator Robert Byrd, the longest-serving Senator in United States history, passed away on Monday at the age of 92. The late Senator served as former Chairman of the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee, a member on the Subcommittee for Military Construction and Veterans Affairs, and a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee. A long-time champion of veterans’ issues, Senator Byrd had an impressive voting record in support of veterans. He was a co-sponsor of the Post-9/11 GI Bill and the Veterans Health Care Budget Reform and Transparency Act of 2009—requiring Congress to pass the VA’s health care budget a year in advance. Senator Byrd has stated that, “Taking care of our veterans has always been one of my highest priorities.”
Senator Byrd will be missed.
