IAVA to Join Top Wall Street Firms, Department of Labor, Chamber of Commerce to Tackle New Veteran Unemployment
Posted by Michelle McCarthy on June 21 2011

IAVA is proud to announce our upcoming participation in the inaugural Veterans on Wall Street (VOWS) conference to tackle new veteran joblessness. The VOWS conference, backed by Bank of America, Citi, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank and Goldman Sachs, will take place on June 23rd at the Intrepid Sea Air & Space Museum in New York City.

IAVA Executive Director and Founder Paul Rieckhoff will be a speaker at the conference along with keynotes General Stanley McChrystal, NYSE Euronext Chairman Marshall Carter, and Senator Chuck Hagel. Attendance for the VOWS conference is free of charge. Iraq and Afghanistan veterans can visit The Rucksack to reserve their free spot at the conference by clicking here.

"IAVA applauds VOWS and their partners for their leadership on the critical issue of veteran unemployment, the number one challenge facing Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. As a nation, we must support the men and women who have served our country over and over again and continue to sacrifice daily. New veterans are looking forward to working with both the private and public sectors to lower the unemployment rate by Veterans Day 2011," said IAVA Founder and Executive Director Paul Rieckhoff.  “With thousands of troops returning home in the coming months and new veteran unemployment peaking at 12 percent in May, now is the time for action. We are encouraged to see Wall Street and the private sector joining forces with public agencies to ease this often-difficult transition from combat to career.”

The conference follows IAVA’s recent participation in VOWS’ June 7th roundtable discussion with major financial institutions, the Chamber of Commerce, the Department of Labor and the National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve to focus on innovative public and private initiatives helping new veterans transition from combat to career. To lower high rates of new veteran unemployment, IAVA recently launched the Combat to Career initiative - a yearlong program bringing the public and private sectors together to implement innovative solutions for reducing new veteran unemployment by Veterans Day 2011.
