Google Steps up for New Veterans
Posted by Christina Kim on May 24 2011

IAVA is working closely with Google to launch new and exciting initiatives for veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan and their families. With more than 214,000 Iraq and Afghanistan veterans unemployed, Americas newest generation of heroes faces unique challenges when they return home. Through work with corporate partners like Google, IAVA aims to ease vets transition out of the military and into civilian life by providing them with access to critical resources, products and training.

This June, IAVA Member Veterans from the New York City area will have the opportunity to visit Google New York for GoogleServe. GoogleServe is the company's annual service initiative where Google employees around the world give back to their local communities-- and this year, they're focused on helped new veterans develop the necessary tools to market themselves for careers in corporate America.

During a series of half-day sessions, IAVA members will have the opportunity to work one-on-one with Google employees on resume writing and interview training. Vets in attendance will also get to eat lunch in the famous Google New York cafeteria and network with fellow Iraq and Afghanistan vets from the area. In addition to the individualized training and attention, they'll also get to see first-hand Google's unique and celebrated approach to attracting, hiring, and retaining its employees.

Are you a NYC-based Iraq or Afghanistan veteran looking to enhance your resume or career skills? Head over to The Rucksack right now to register for the following Google Resume Workshops in June. Please note the workshop is not a job interview with Google!

  • Friday, June 10th from 9:00am - 2:15pm
  • Monday, June 13th from 10:00am - 2:45pm
  • Thursday, June 16th from 10:00am - 2:45pm
  • Friday, June 17th from 10:00am - 2:45pm

Google's support for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans during the transition home extends beyond GoogleServe. Last fall, Google employees came out in full force to support IAVA during Veterans Week 2010 at our Fourth Annual Heroes Gala and the Veterans Day Parade in New York City. Google's got IAVA's back!
