Veterans Stand with Senator Sanders to Oppose Cuts in Living Allowances

UPDATED: Senator Sanders held another press conference Jan. 31, 2013, about his continued opposition to changing the consumer price index to cut Social Security and disabled veterans’ benefits. Like the December 2012 event, he was joined by a coalition of seniors, veterans and labor organizations, including IAVA. Tom Tarantino spoke about the issue for IAVA:

IAVA has a super-sized Super Bowl week in NOLA

IAVA had a jam-packed week in the Big Easy in the lead up to the Super Bowl. From rebuilding a Katrina-survivor's (and Army vet's) home with the St. Bernard Project to having exclusive access at ESPN's SportsNation to hosting a fundraising breakfast with Coach Bill Cowher to having a segment on CBS' pre-game coverage - IAVA was busy.

It’s with great sadness that we honor the passing of Gordon Mansfield, former Acting Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs.Gordon was a great man who left a legacy of service to the nation and to fellow veterans.


IAVA & The Fullbridge Program: Workplace Development for New Veterans

In fall of 2012, IAVA and the Fullbridge Program partnered together to connect ten Iraq and Afghanistan veterans with an exclusive, veterans-focused version of the Fullbridge Program -- a rigorous, three-week business and entrepreneurship course. This first IAVA-Fullbridge cohort attended the all-expenses paid pilot program from January 2-18, 2013 in Boston, MA. Divided into two teams, participants worked with Fullbridge coaches to both build upon and translate the skills they learned in the military to the civilian workplace.

IAVA & the Fullbridge Program: Week 3 Reflections

Following the conclusion of the first IAVA and Fullbridge Program Business Immersion program, several of the veteran participants have shared their reflections on the overall experience. Armed with the skills and knowledge gained through their intensive business bootcamp -- learning about financial statements, financial analysis, presentation skills and more -- this group of ten IAVA Member Veterans is set on a path for continued and accelerated career success.

After two intense weeks, the first cohort of IAVA members in the Fullbridge Program's Business Immersion Program have been on a wild ride. They've experienced failures and successes, lows and highs, and - above all - the opportunity to both use and build upon the skills and experience they gained in the military to succeed in an intensive business bootcamp.


Record high military suicides in 2012

On Monday, the Department of Defense reported that 349 active duty service members took their own lives in 2012 - the highest number since they began closely tracking suicides in 2001.
