My name is Tom Fenwick and I'm an Iraq war veteran who served four years in the Marines and six years in the Army National Guard. I completed my Bachelor’s degree in 2006, and after working a couple of years in a startup, I decided to go back to school for a Masters, which I earned in 2010 while working full-time. I began my job search while going back to school, but for a guy with a higher degree and 10 years of military career under my belt, I felt disappointed with the prospects.

The New "Reverse Boot Camp" For Service Members Leaving the Military

President Obama’s speech to the VFW on Monday announced an upgrade that’s been anticipated for quite some time: a new Transition Assistance Program (TAP), or “reverse boot camp,” for service members leaving the military. The goal of the program is to help ease the transition from active military service to the civilian world by tailoring theTAP program to a servicemember’s post-service goals before they leave the military.

Recently, our executive director Paul Rieckhoff spoke at the 92Y in New York City to advocate for veterans facing unemployment, among other challenges, upon coming home from war. Veterans offer unparalleled leadership experience to American businesses, and Paul calls on Congress to enact policy to help our service members translate their veteran skills to civilian success.
