IAVA Testifies on Lifetime Costs of War

Following IAVA's meeting at the White House Tuesday afternoon on the impact of debt default on veterans and their families, IAVA Founder and Executive Director Paul Rieckhoff testifed before the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee on Wednesday at a hearing on “Examining the Lifetime Costs of Supporting the Newest Generation of Veterans.” Ahead of large-scale troop withdrawals from Iraq and Afghanistan, the hearing examined the long-term impact of the wars and how the public and private sectors can join forces to support new veterans from their initial transition home through the rest of their lives.

Americans from all across the nation have shown their support for America’s newest generation of veterans and IAVA by collecting their can tabs and mailing them in to Give a Veteran a Piece of the High Life!


Renaming the Campaigns

“A soldier will fight long and hard for a bit of colored ribbon.” Those words of wisdom come from Napoleon Bonaparte, who knew a bit about the battlefield himself (that, and big hats). There’s a long military tradition of awarding combat veterans medals and campaign ribbons to commemorate their service, something that has become a staple of the American military, as well.

Walter Reed Closes After A Century of Service

Today, after 102 years in service to our nation's wounded warriors, Walter Reed Army Medical Center held a closing ceremony as the military prepares to move hundreds of patients to new and refurbished facilities in Maryland and Virginia. Since September 11th, Walter Reed has treated more than 18,000 veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan. Next month, Walter Reed’s hospital operations will transition to the National Naval Medical Center and to a new facility at Fort Belvoir.

After IAVA Call to Action, VA Steps In to Amend New GI Bill Regulations

In response to today's pressure, IAVA has just received good news that the Department of Veterans Affairs has chimed in on the Restoring GI Bill Fairness Act of 2011 [H.R. 1383] after talks with the House Veterans Affairs Committee. According to the VA, it will now regulate HR 1383 (pending passage) so that the January 4, 2011 eligibility date will cover all student veterans attending school during the Winter/Spring terms of the 2010/2011 school year.
